July 2007: Computer Science Graduate program ranked among the best!
The computer science graduate program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is ranked 60th nationally and 2nd in the tri-state region of Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska, in a new methodology for ranking graduate programs in Computer Science. In the world ranking, UMKC's program is ranked in the top 100 (at 96th), which is higher than both Oxford and Cambridge. In the tri-state region, Washington University in St. Louis is the only one ranked ahead of UMKC.This ranking in based on the number of archival publications in a selective set of top ACM and IEEE peer-reviewed research journals over a sustained period of time. An important aspect about this scholarly-publication based approach is that it avoids consideration of subjective opinions about an institution or a program. The new methodology is developed by researchers at the University of California-Irvine and is discussed in a publication in the June 2007 issue of Communication of the ACM. (Data for this study is available at UC-Irvine site.)
When the study is restricted to "Computer Networking" research for publications in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, arguably the highest rated networking research journal (and the only networking research journal included in evaluating 'computer science' overall ranking in this study), UMKC's computer networking research program is ranked 17th worldwide, 15th nationally, and remains 2nd in the tri-state region (behind Washington University).
