Abstract:

In recent years geographical mobility has become an essential part of the entire workforce infrastructure. Consumers of information want to see that the data they need for being functional and productive is available from any place, at any time, through any computing device-static or mobile; be accessible in the sky, on the ground, and probably near the sea-bed. As a result, the way data travels from one place to another, the way they are stored, the way they are accessed by a user, etc., and their entire processing paradigm have changed significantly. Sometimes users PULL their required data, sometimes it is PUSHed to them, sometimes users do not have to wait at all for the required information, sometimes they are doomed, and many more things. In spite of these we are much better off than what we were. In this seminar we talk about all these, especially, how your data exists in your own space. We look at data broadcast through wireless channels, we look at how data is stored in space, and how we have combined database technology and data movement. We are not secured if, at least, we do not talk about security. So we also talk a bit about security scheme we have developed. We also touch upon TRUST and security in Peer-to-Peer systems and glance at sensor technology. This talk dominates with the NSF supported work we have done at our department. Hope you find this talk useful.

Brief biography:

Vijay Kumar is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His research areas are mobile database systems, Trust and Security in P2P, Sensor Technology, Wireless data broadcast, etc. Time to time, he peeks into Bioinformatics area too but has not impressed anybody, especially any funding agencies. Most of his research projects have been supported by NSF and industries such as HP technology, ABC Virtual, St. Lukes Hospitals, etc. His future plan is to continue to work in these research areas and some other useful areas such as wood working to keep him busy.
